Serviceability Is Crucial to Control

The first part of Controlled Operating Environment™ is keeping the wheel-end cleaner during operation. The second part is keeping it cleaner during service. Every inspection, oil change, and maintenance event is a chance to restore the system or accidentally introduce the next round of contamination.

The Xtractor® changes that equation with the HexThread® Cartridge, a front-access service interface that makes hub inspection and service faster, cleaner, and more uniform across technicians, shops, and fleet locations.

Variability is the enemy of Reliability

Variability is one of the hidden costs in fleet maintenance. A fleet may have written procedures, trained technicians, and scheduled PMs, but traditional wheel-end service still leaves room for differences in execution. Over time, those small differences become differences in lubricant cleanliness, wear rate, heat generation, and bearing performance. The more often it happens, and the more locations or technicians involved, the harder it becomes to guarantee that each wheel-end returns to service in the same condition.

HexThread® turns service into a controlled operation

HexThread helps engineer variability out of the process. Because the hub cap is serviced through a fixed front-access cartridge, the system itself defines how the interaction happens. This creates a more repeatable service standard across technicians and locations.

Remove the Cartridge

Leave the hub cap body in place. No removing bolts, scraping spent gaskets, or grinding hub flanges and introducing particulate contaminants into the hub.

Inspect or Replace the Cartridge

While lubricant drains from the hub, inspect the HexThread Cartridge filter for captured particulates. Return to service if clean, or replace if loaded with contamination.

The dollar impact starts with time

Service shops bill hub cap-related work at roughly 40 minutes per wheel, reflecting the time required for removal, service, and reinstallation. The HexThread Cartridge system dramatically simplifies that process, reducing the actual hands-on work to approximately 3–5 minutes. With The Xtractor®, the job itself takes less time because the service process is simpler, cleaner, and built into the hub cap.

Billing Should Reflect Reduced Work

For an in-house fleet maintenance operation, the savings are easier to capture. If your own technicians can complete the job faster, you reclaim that time directly through higher throughput, shorter bay occupancy, and more units serviced per shift.

For fleets using outside service partners, the savings opportunity is still real, but it may require updated billing expectations. Many shops bill in minimum labor increments, so a service that takes only a few minutes may still be charged at a 30-minute minimum. Xtractor service should not be billed like traditional hub cap removal when that work is no longer being performed. There may be the need to negotiate an Xtractor-specific service code or to secure fair billing.
